EGW is extremely proud to have been named a 2019 Certified Best Workplace by the Best Christian Workplaces Institute! Through proactive planning and hard work, we strive to create a workplace culture that promotes integrity, authenticity and selflessness. This was achieved through listening to our employees and enacting programs to improve, not just their work lives, but their everyday lives in general.

We started our journey to becoming a Certified Best Workplace in 2018 with an anonymous survey that all employees completed. Questions were wide ranging, from benefits satisfaction to management processes, with the main goal of getting honest feedback about all aspects of their jobs. Once responses were received, we reviewed our strengths and weaknesses and didn’t shy away from tackling the issues that were put forward. Those included improving benefits, having more social events to bring employees together during and outside of work, and ensuring that everyone’s voice is heard when it comes to improving work processes. Listening to your employees is just one step. Nothing will improve if not acted upon!

After implementing changes throughout the year, the survey was sent out again to measure our progress. We were excited to see that the advancements brought upon by the original survey created such a positive shift in culture. And we’re not done! Our commitment is to keep listening to our employees and continuing to improve based on their feedback. A healthy workplace culture leads to a greater focus on our companies’ mission, core values and customers. With everyone working with the right attitude towards the same goal, we’ll continue to build towards further success!

Explosion Proof Lights: Understanding Class and Division

Certified Explosion Proof Light for Hazardous Location

Safety is a major concern when it comes to underground utility equipment, and lighting is no different. Certified explosion proof lights are required by OSHA for hazardous locations, such as areas containing flammable vapors, liquids or gases, or combustible dust or fibers. It is these types of environments that help categorize what Class and Division an explosion proof light is certified for.

Class and Division Explained

There are three classes of explosion proof lights, known as Class I, Class II, and Class III. These are the broadest sense in which explosion proof lights are distinguished from each other. The classes are then each broken down further into two separate divisions.

The three classes and their corresponding divisions:

  • Class I, Division 1 – Where ignitable concentrations of flammable gases, vapors or liquids are present continuously or frequently within the atmosphere under normal operation conditions.
  • Class I, Division 2 – Where ignitable concentrations of flammable gases, vapors, or liquids are present within the atmosphere under abnormal operating conditions.
  • Class II, Division 1 – Where ignitable concentrations of combustible dusts are present within the atmosphere under normal operation conditions.
  • Class II, Division 2 – Where ignitable concentrations of combustible dust are present within the atmosphere under abnormal operating conditions.
  • Class III, Division 1 – Where easily ignitable fibers or materials producing combustible flyings are present within the atmosphere under normal operation conditions.
  • Class III, Division 2 – Where easily ignitable fibers or materials producing combustible flyings are present within the atmosphere under abnormal operating conditions.
